Tahsis Take Off

In the fall of 1971, my dad spent a few months working out in Tahsis. He was hired to install the electrical wiring in the new school being built, but he obviously had some time to take some pictures. Here's a series of shots of a BC Air plane taking off. 1971 Tahsis The Goose (1) 1971 Tahsis The Goose (2) 1971 Tahsis The Goose (3) 1971 Tahsis The Goose (4)

State of the Art

From a 1969 plane-spotting trip to Dorval (now Trudeau) International Airport, the state of the art of Air Canada's fleet. Well, no, not really. It's a Vickers Viscount, the last prop plane that Air Canada had in service, the last one being retired in 1974. 1969 Dorval 6

Somewhere Over Both Ends of The Rainbow

They say there's a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. However, in 1971 in Tahsis, BC, my father discovered that it wasn't true. And he had the photographic evidence to prove it. 1971 rainbow at Tahsis

What's that, you say? Maybe the gold was at the other end of the rainbow? No, no luck there, either. 1971 Tahsis Other end of the Rainbow

Flower Friday!

My dad loved taking pictures of flowers and bugs. I'm going through literally hundreds of pictures from his garden, and every few Fridays, I'll post some flower pics. Here's a typical example from the 1990s. I'm no gardener, so I couldn't tell you what it is. I have no idea why he was drawn to bugs and flowers, but he would sit for hours waiting for an insect to land in the right spot. IMG_0013

Thetis Lake Kayakers - 1974

Today, I have a two-fer for you. Taken from a pair of slides, these two images show kayakers playing kayak polo at Thetis Lake in 1974. I've taken up kayaking in the last few years and kayak at the lake all the time, but I've never seen this many kayaks in the lake at one time! Check out the second picture. You can see that the paddles have holes in them to catch and throw the ball with. You can see that one kayaker has caught the orange ball in the hole in his paddle and is getting ready to throw it. Camping With Dad

I'd thought I'd start this journey through my father's photo archive with a self-portrait. Except I can't seem to find one. The closest I've found so far is this one that he took when we went camping one summer at Scoen Lake. I think. It was either that or Buttle Lake. Anyway, he set the camera up on a picnic table with the timer going and he got the shot. scan0035
